Unveiling the Layers of Advocacy: KAYAV's Impactful Event on Domestic Violence and Mental Health

Updated: Jan 26

By Sara Bokrugji

As a fortunate attendee of an event organised by KAYAV, my experience delved into the heart of a crucial issue – domestic violence against women, particularly in the context of women. Alsa UK demonstrated this opportunity to me, enabling me to gain an in-depth knowledge on the actions that are currently in place to combat violence specifically against women. Hosted with utmost dedication by KAYAV, the event shedded light on the international aspects of this problem and whether the UK is acting proactively to combat this issue especially regarding refugees that have had to undergo this treatment.

Distinguished speakers, including the ex-MP Keith Best, councillor Aicha Less and Director of NKLC Franck Kiangala all stated the work that they are putting to improve the circumstances of survivors. The speakers graced the event with insightful discussions. Keith Best shared his profound involvement in addressing domestic violence, illustrating the pivotal role leaders play in combating such issues. His firsthand accounts and the strides he has taken left a lasting impression, showcasing the power of individuals in positions of influence to instigate change.

Defining mental health and domestic violence was also a key aspect. Changing the narrative instead of being a "victim" to being a "survivor". Hearing the experiences of these individuals brought a unique perspective to mental health and violence.

Amina Meshnuni, the founder of Mental Health Planet underscored the interconnectedness of domestic violence and mental health. Amina shared her experiences in advocating for mental health awareness, emphasising that various life aspects, including the challenging journey of refugees escaping violence, can significantly impact mental well-being.

My invitation to this enlightening event was made possible through Alsa UK, an organisation committed to making a positive impact on societal issues and uplift young people through their career development journey. The opportunity enabled me to witness powerful and inspiring discussions but also to reflect on the interconnected nature of social challenges. The networking aspect of the event was equally enriching. Engaging with like-minded individuals and passionate advocates created an environment conducive to sharing ideas and fostering collaboration. It was during one of these interactions that I discovered a new volunteer opportunity, further extending the impact of my involvement beyond the event itself.

In conclusion, the event hosted by KAYAV was a testament to the power of collective action. I left with a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between domestic violence, mental health, and the challenges faced by refugees. The talks by the speakers served as beacons of inspiration, encouraging attendees to contribute actively to positive change. As I embark on a new volunteer opportunity, I carry with me the lessons learned and the motivation gained from this impactful event.
