From humble beginnings in Albania to the Hallowed Halls of Oxford

Updated: Jul 3

I am Aurora Kapo, a 23-year-old originally from the seaside city of Durres, Albania, where I spent my formative years. After completing high school, like many of my young, fellow friends, I seized the opportunity to pursue higher education abroad. Studying internationally provides a broader perspective on global relations, cultural diversity, networking prospects, and countless other possibilities.

I chose to continue my academic journey in Amsterdam, one of the world's most cosmopolitan and international cities. There, I was immersed in a rich tapestry of backgrounds, personalities, narratives, and educational experiences through my engagement with the international student community. My involvement extended to student panels, the Faculty Student Council, and the Central Student Council. Notably, I became the first Econometrics student in a decade to be elected as a Student Representative, an honour I cherished deeply.

Econometrics and Data Science was an exciting however tough challenge, requiring analytical and strategic problem-solving approaches to engage with complex scenarios. The coursework consistently pushed me beyond my boundaries, compelling me to consider the broader picture. Furthermore, as an Albanian student, entering data science studies, I confronted additional obstacles originated from the high standard of facilities and education in Europe and the competitiveness of well-prepared peers in these quantitative fields.

I had the privilege of visiting the United States, broadening my horizons and gaining invaluable cross-disciplinary insights. Realising my long-held dream of experiencing American life was a significantly transformative prospect. Remarkably, merely two months later, I received my offer from the University of Oxford, initiating another life-altering transition I never anticipated.

I never expected I would leave the Netherlands, at least for a couple of years. The opportunity to attend the dream university, Oxford, was both humbling and thrilling. Many aspire to such an achievement over a lifetime, by dreaming, thinking and getting well prepared their whole life.

Through attentive effort during my bachelor's studies and a willingness to make sacrifices in my social life, I positioned myself for this remarkable opportunity. Upon arrival, it was natural to experience imposter syndrome, questioning if I deserved such exceptional experience. However, I've come to recognize that every student at this esteemed institution has earned their place through merit and dedication.

My presence at Oxford has indelibly reshaped my perspective on life. Here, I am part of an elite collective, compelled to think globally and consider the broad impact of our efforts. The charming old buildings, some over a century old, the fascinating traditions like wearing gowns and formal dinners, and the admired Matriculation day, all contribute to an unparalleled experience.

The MSc in Statistical Science is an incredible master's program, honing not only statistical proficiency but also providing invaluable exposure to the expanding fields of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. As these technologies infuse every aspect of modern life, the ability to develop a theoretical understanding and hands-on implementation skills is invaluable. This highly quantitative and theoretical degree has deepened my skills and way of thinking. For this reason, my tip for everyone who aims to be part of this field is to be prepared to embrace high-dimensional thinking, large-scale problem-solving, and proficiency in programming.

In closing, my journey thus far has been one of continual growth, challenge, and opportunity. From my humble beginnings in Albania to the hallowed halls of Oxford, each step has fortified my resolve and expanded my horizons. I am deeply grateful for the unwavering support of my family, which has enabled me to pursue my dreams fearlessly. As I look ahead, I am empowered by the knowledge that with perseverance and an open mind, any aspiration is feasible.
